Israeli-Iranian Military Collision on May 10, 2018 – Immediate Observations

On May 10, 2018 the Iranian Revolutionary Guards (IRG) shot twenty rockets at Israel from inside Syria. In response, Israel struck Syrian-based IRG weapons depots, logistics sites, and intelligence bases – as well as a Syrian army surface-to-air missile battery. It is my analysis that this Israeli-Iranian military collision of May 10, 2018 has left Iran – for now –…

Bewildering American Move – Operation Protective Edge

Why was US Secretary of State John Kerry’s latest cease fire proposal rejected by Egypt, Israel, the Palestinian Authority and Saudi Arabia? Another misstep on the part of the US Administration stemming from a misreading of the Middle Eastern Map, results in the US government scrambling to do damage control. As the Middle East goes through increasing turbulence, stemming from the enormous challenges the region is confronting, it is critical that the West, especially the United States, understand how to foster and cultivate stability in the face of those that are determined to foment instability.   Avi Melamed, former Israeli Senior Official on Arab Affairs and former Intelligence Official and educator, is today an Independent Middle East Strategic Intelligence Analyst,…

Muqawama, Money, Missiles

July 15, 2014 Muqawama, Money, Missiles By Avi Melamed The current round of violence between Israel and Hamas is caused by the simplest reason imaginable, yet very few are aware of it. MONEY. Let’s start with a clarification. Today, the real boss in the Gaza Strip, is a massively armed military force of about ten to fifteen thousand Palestinians known as the Ezzedeen Al-Qassam Brigades. Ezzedeen Al-Qassam is often presented as the military wing of Hamas – the rulers of the Gaza Strip. However, that definition should be revised to more accurately reflect the current reality. Today, the militia – the Ezzedeen Al-Qassam Brigades, who rule the Gaza Strip – have a political wing, named Hamas. It is the Ezzedeen…

Hamas’ Kingdom of Crime

January 23, 2012 by Avi Melamed From its inception in the 1980s, Hamas has portrayed itself as a movement deeply rooted in Islamic principles and dedicated to the teachings of the Quran. Concentrating its attention on building a power base in the Gaza Strip, Hamas has proclaimed as its primary purpose the development of programs intended to improve the lives of the Palestinian people. In January 2006 Palestinians voters registered their support for Hamas’ stated goals by electing a majority of the organization’s slate of candidates to the Palestinian parliament, thereby constituting a strong opposition to the block of delegates representing the views of the Palestinian Authority. Eighteen months later, in June 2007, Hamas mounted a bloody coup that wrested…

Showbiz: The Palestinian Inner Reconciliation

December 18, 2011  by Avi Melamed Recently, and not for the first time, there is talk of an inner Palestinian reconciliation between the Palestinian Authority (Fatah) and Hamas. In late November a meeting was held in Cairo between Abu Mazen, the Palestinian President, and Khaled Masha’l, the Head of the Political Bureau of Hamas.  Following the meeting both leaders formally declared that all of the problems and disagreements between the sides were resolved.  It was reported that both leaders agreed to release each other’s imprisoned activists.  Masha’l even promised the Palestinian President that Hamas was willing to adopt the concept of “civilian resistance” and to pause, temporarily, its concept of “violent resistance.”  In addition, Masha’l committed that Hamas would…

Osama Bin Laden is Dead and Alive

May 7, 2011 by Avi Melamed Over the past week the killing of Osama Bin Laden has been discussed from a plethora of perspectives.  In this article I would like to present a less discussed and less familiar part of the discussion.  The killing of Bin Laden reveals deep layers within the Arab world.  What are they?   What can we learn from these layers about the nature of the relations between the Muslim world and the West?  And, inevitably, I will also talk about the Israeli aspect of this issue. Here is a strange sentence:  Osama Bin Laden is dead and Osama Bin Laden is alive. Let me be clear:  In my mind he is definitely dead.  However, many people…

Making Friends with a Scorpion: the Murder of the Italian Peace Activist in the Gaza Strip

May 1, 2011 by Avi Melamed Today, and rightfully so, everyone is following the dramatic assassination of Osama Bin Laden.  I will write more in depth about this issue later this week. At this time, however, I would like to share an article I completed a few days ago.  As the news broke yesterday morning, I debated the timing and thought to delay distribution.  However, as I reflected on the day’s events and its place within our world today, I actually felt that the timing was perfect The article below discusses two aspects that are directly related to Bin Laden’s legacy of terror and death.                                                                                                   One phenomenon is the arm of Radical Islamic Terror, an “Octopus,” that is clearly inspired…
