Arab Journalist Challenges Arab Media

December 9, 2012 Below is a translation of an article by the Kuwaiti journalist, Abdullah Al Hadlaq.  I referred to it in my video: Arab Perspectives on Operation Pillar of Defense.    The article, quite an exceptional one, was published in the Al-Watan newspaper in Kuwait on November 19, 2012.  I bring this piece to you attention because it is my goal to expose you to the Arab voices that advocate for “the Israeli side.” I hope you find it interesting and valuable.  A Word of Truth: Double Standards and Not Calling Things by their Real Name by Abdullah Al Hadlaq When terror organizations in the Gaza Strip, including Hamas, launch rockets on Israeli cities attempting to kill innocent civilians including…

Operation Pillar of Defense: Arab Perspectives (part 1) عملية عامود السحاب والبعد العربية מבצע עמוד ענן – זוית ערבית

In this video, Avi Melamed the founder of feenjan.com (a non-profit organization) is talking about Arab perspectives on the Israeli military operation Pillar of Defense (November 2012).

Arab Perspectives: Operation Pillar of Defense (part 1)

In this video, that I originally filmed for Feenjan (please see below for more info), in Arabic (with English subtitles) I talk about the way Arabs view Israel’s motivation to launch Operation Pillar of Defense. In this video I discuss the real reason that motivated Israel to launch the operation that was not mentioned in the any analysis made by Arab writers, commentators or politicians and what can we learn from that.  Along with the different Arab reasons I present (some of which by the way are quite groundless…) I also share with you a most exceptional and rare perspective of a Kuwaiti columnist. I am not sure how many of you are familiar with my initiative Feenjan.  Feenjan – Israel speaks Arabic is a non-profit initiative which I founded and support that presents contemporary Israeli society and…

Saudi Arabian Daily Okaz Confirms my October 13 article Hezbollah Launched Rockets on Syrian City

October 18, 2012 by Avi Melamed On Sunday, October 14 I wrote a short piece Hezbollah Launched Rocket Attack on Syrian City announcing that Hezbollah had launched a rocket attack from inside Lebanon targeting the Syrian city of Al-Qusayr. Today (October 17, 2012) an official spokesperson of The Free Syrian Army confirmed my report stating that Hezbollah has launched massive rockets and mortar attacks from the Lebanese area of Hosh Ali on the outskirts of the Syrian city of Al Qusyir. Here is a link to the article published in the Saudi Arabian daily newspaper Okaz http://www.okaz.com.sa/new/Issues/20121017/Con20121017541085.htm I have also taken the liberty of providing you with a “google translation” of the article: Informed sources in the Syrian opposition’s Okaz…

The Iranians and the Mossad are in Cahoots and Other Assorted Distortions…

October 6, 2012 by Avi Melamed The violent events in the Arab and Muslim world sparked by the movie “Innocence of Muslims” do not reflect the majority of Muslims.  In fact, it is doing them a disservice because the truth is that the majority of Muslims reject extremism. That being said, the events do reflect the deep feelings of frustration and inferiority which are rampant today in the Muslim and Arab world.  These feelings stem from the fact that the Arab and Muslim world today is by and large an “underachieving” society – socially and economically – plagued by suffocating poverty, high rates of unemployment, ever-growing corruption, paralyzing illiteracy, lack of civil and personal rights, and escalating violence. The events that…

The Sinai Peninsula: A Growing Strategic Threat

August 30, 2012 by Avi Melamed According to a one senior Egyptian analyst, the Rafah terror attack was planned over the course of three months by six  Jihadist and Takfir groups. One of the groups also involved, according to one senior Egyptian official, was a Palestinian terror group based in the Gaza Strip named Jeish Al Islam (Islam’s Army). The groups involved in the attack are not part of Al-Qaida.  However, they are inspired by its ideology.  Al-Qaida has announced the establishment of an Islamic Emirate in the Sinai Peninsula and as far back as December 20, 2011, Al-Qaida announced the presence of its military wing in the Sinai Peninsula, called Ansar Al Jihad. Some of the militants that perpetrated…

Nasrallah is sending a message…..But to whom ??

August 23, 2012 by Avi Melamed Arab source reports that last week Hezbollah conducted the largest military ground maneuver exercise in its history.  The operation, held in the Beqa’a (the Lebanese valley) included 10,000 members of Hezbollah’s elite force – many of the militants are 16 – 20 years old. Nasrallah personally attended and monitored part of the exercise together with officers of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards. The maneuver simulated Hezbollah’s takeover of the Upper Galilee area in Israel. Hezbollah’s tactics resembled the ones they practiced during the 2006 war with one main difference – the new advanced weapon systems supplied to Hezbollah by Iran.  Their new arsenal includes advanced anti-tank missiles and drones that can be used for both intelligence…

Nasrallah Gets a Taste of his Own Bitter Medicine

June 21, 2012 by Avi Melamed While the world continues to witness the ongoing tragedy in Syria, there is another “mini-drama” simultaneously taking place in that country which is significant. On May 22nd reports began to flow in from different sources that Lebanese Shiite pilgrims returning from Iran had been kidnapped inside Syria. It seems that the sequence of the events was as follows: On May 22nd two buses carrying Lebanese men and women entered Syria via the Salama crossing located on the Syrian-Turkish border. One bus had the sign “Musa Sadr” and the other had the sign “AlBader AlKubra” (read the links for the meaning of those names). Shortly after crossing into Syrian territory the buses were stopped by…

Iran: Anatomy of a Desperate Society

May 6, 2012 by Avi Melamed   In 1979 Rouhallah Ayatollah Khomeini sparked the Islamic revolution in Iran.  With that Revolution the rule of the Pahlavi dynasty in Iran came to end. The Islamic Revolution established a theocratic regime in Iran, or as the country has been called from that time on, “The Islamic Republic of Iran.” The regime that came to power envisioned the Islamic Republic of Iran to become a beacon of progress, prosperity and achievement.  In their vision “The Islamic Republic of Iran” would be the ultimate proof of Islam’s (and mostly Shiite Islam’s) moral and practical superiority. However vision is one thing and reality is another…More than 30 years after the Revolution, Iranian society in 2012…

Cruel Iraq Percolating Democracy

March 15, 2012      by Avi Melamed   According to recent reports, at least fourteen teenagers – some argue that the number is actually much higher – were murdered inIraq.  Most of the youths were stoned and others were shot.  They were targeted because they were labeled as “Satan worshipers.” These teenagers are known in Arabic as “emo” – a shortcut for the English word “emotional.”   Their apparel and codes of dress are clearly inspired by Western heavy metal music and culture. An anonymous entity entitled “The Rage Companies” published a leaflet which included the names of twenty-two other Iraqi teenagers.  The “Rage Companies” demand that these twenty-two individuals sever their connection with the “emo” group otherwise they too will be…

Inside Hezbollah’s Private Dominion

February 14, 2012 by Avi Melamed The southern quarter of Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, is known by the name Al Dahya Al Janobiya.  Since the 1980’s Al Dahya has been primarily populated by Shiites most of whom came to Beirut from the southern part of Lebanon and the  Beqa’a area (a 120 km long and narrow valley in the center of Lebanon). Al Dahya is also the nerve center of  Hezbollah.  Al Dahya is the home of Hezbollah’s central headquarters as well as their main offices, thousands of Hezbollah members live there, including its senior leadership.  Al Dahya, like southern Lebanon and the Beqa’a area, is completely under the control of Hezbollah.  Practically speaking, the State of Lebanon has…
