A New Middle East Requires a New Understanding. Events of an historic scale are rocking the Middle East. I have spent many years of my life in the streets of the Arab world.  I have watched the Arab Awakening evolve and erupt from the inside. The Middle East in changing before our very eyes, the landscape is shifting and changing every day, and can drastically change any minute now. My upcoming US lecture tour will help you understand the present and navigate the future. Egypt, the biggest and most important Arab State, is embroiled a fierce battle over its identity. Egypt: Countdown to June 30th 2013

by Avi Melamed Tension is skyrocketing in Egypt. On Sunday, June 30th, a massive demonstration is scheduled to take place in Cairo. This demonstration marks the climax of a widening public campaign launched in Egypt under the name “Tamarrud” (“Rebellion”). The Tamarrud campaign calls for the resignation of Egypt’s elected president Mohamed Morsi, the dispersing of the Egyptian Parliament and the holding of new elections. Ever since the revolution and the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak in January 2011, Egypt has been experiencing ongoing political turbulence, a deepening economic crisis, increasing disorder and escalating violence. The campaign and the expected demonstration are another link in a long chain of public expressions of discontent in Egypt. In December 2012 I published a video analyzing the situation…

The Alliance of Fear in Lebanon

June 6, 2013 by Avi Melamed As the war in Syria percolates into Lebanon and Iraq, turning into a massive Sunni-Shiite collision, it is worthwhile to take a close look at another factor in Lebanon – The Palestinians. Some half a million Palestinians (who are all Sunni) live in Lebanon. They live in large refugee camps scattered throughout most of Lebanon. The biggest one is Ain Al-Hilweh, located next to the city of Sidon, the biggest city in southern Lebanon, which is also predominately Sunni. Other large camps are located in the vicinity of Beirut as well as in the area surrounding Tripoli, the biggest city in northern Lebanon, which similar to Sidon, is also predominately Sunni. The scenario of…

The Spider Caught in its Own Web

May 31, 2013 by Avi Melamed Since late 2011, I have been outlining a scenario in which Hezbollah in Lebanon would find itself in a violent confrontation with a Sunni Syrian-Lebanese crescent (links to articles on the subject are at the bottom). These very days – right in front of our eyes – it is happening… On Sunday May 26 three rockets were fired at Al Dahya Al Janobiya in the southern quarter of Beirut – the capital of Lebanon. As many of you may remember from my article Inside Hezbollah’s Private Dominion (February 2012), Al Dahya Al Janobiya is the major stronghold of Hezbollah in Lebanon. The attack on Hezbollah’s stronghold is not a surprise. Syrian rebels and Lebanese…

The Syrian Stalingrad

******* Intelligence Bulletin Information Date:     May 22 2013 Event Date:     Now and Ongoing Information Item:     The Syrian Stalingrad Information Platform:     Various Source:     Varied Source Reliability:     Reliable Information Validity:     Valid Relevant Information:     In October 2012 I wrote an article entitled “Pay Attention to the Battle over Al-Qusayr in Syria” in this article I explained the strategic importance of the city of Al-Qusayr and the surrounding area. These very days, after months of fierce fighting over the city and its outskirts, Assad’s troops, together with Hezbollah, Iranian soldiers and Iraqi Shiite militants are launching a massive attack on Al-Qusayr. They are indiscriminately bombing the city with rockets and…

One Israeli Soldier Impacts the Arab World

May 21, 2013 In June 2006 the Palestinian organization, Hamas, abducted Gilad Shalit, an Israeli soldier. Shalit was held in captivity inside the Gaza Strip for more than five years. During this period of time the Israeli government and Hamas held long and complex negotiations regarding the terms for Shalit’s release. Throughout Gilad’s captivity, an intense ongoing campaign for his release was waged inside Israel and across the world. The campaign put pressure on the Israeli government to pay a high price, if needed, to bring Gilad Shalit back home. That demand reflects one of the most profound values of Israeli society – Israel’s moral obligation and responsibility to do whatever it may take to bring back home abducted or missing Israeli soldiers. The campaign…

Saudi Arabian Daily Okaz Confirms my October 13 article Hezbollah Launched Rockets on Syrian City

October 18, 2012 by Avi Melamed On Sunday, October 14 I wrote a short piece Hezbollah Launched Rocket Attack on Syrian City announcing that Hezbollah had launched a rocket attack from inside Lebanon targeting the Syrian city of Al-Qusayr. Today (October 17, 2012) an official spokesperson of The Free Syrian Army confirmed my report stating that Hezbollah has launched massive rockets and mortar attacks from the Lebanese area of Hosh Ali on the outskirts of the Syrian city of Al Qusyir. Here is a link to the article published in the Saudi Arabian daily newspaper Okaz http://www.okaz.com.sa/new/Issues/20121017/Con20121017541085.htm I have also taken the liberty of providing you with a “google translation” of the article: Informed sources in the Syrian opposition’s Okaz…

October 7, 2012 by Avi Melamed Head of the Military Intelligence Directorate, Maj. Gen. Aviv Kochavi, and other senior members of Military Intelligence toured the Golan Heights on Wednesday, October 3 and express concern for the security of the area due to the growing Jihad presence. Their comments support the article I posted on September 20 entitled A Disturbing Scenario in the Golan Heights. The War in Syria Rages on Over 30,000 are Dead and the World Sits

October 4, 2012 March 21, 2011 Avi writes an article Syria: The Wall of Fear is cracking in which he discusses the ramifications of the uprising in Syria. “…Syria is neither Egypt nor Tunisia…that regime will not hesitate to oppress the uprising by all means possible…the events in Syria will have an enormous impact on Israel in the short term as well as the long term.  The turbulence in Syria will directly impact the whole structure of Iran-Syria- Hezbollah–Hamas, the radical Axis that challenges Israel.   At this point there is one major question that must be asked:  What will the position of the international community be in a situation where events in Syria quickly deteriorate into a bloody massacre in…

The Muslim Brotherhood Belly Dancing

September 22, 2012 November 8, 2011 Avi Melamed writes an article The Arab Awakening: An Era of New Slogans  “…The Arab world is in flux and the Muslim Brotherhood movement in Egypt, is now in unfamiliar territory – they are finally in the driver’s seat.   Therefore, they will have to bridge the gaps between their ideology and the need for pragmatism…I think it is quite reasonable to assume that the policy of the Muslim Brotherhood will be characterized by a permanent inner-tension that stems from their need to bridge their rigid ideology and their need for pragmatism.  And it is likely that this tension will create turbulence that will inevitably impact the region.”  September 22, 2012 an article published in L.A…
