Arab Perspectives on Operation Pillar of Defense (part 2)

In Part 1 of this 2 Part Series that I originally filmed for Feenjan (please see below for more info), in Arabic (with English subtitles) I talked about the way Arabs view Israel’s motivation to launch Operation Pillar of Defense. In this video (part 2) I present you different questions some in the Arab world are beginning to ask regarding the Palestinian narrative and Radical Islamic perspective on victory, real achievements and “The Resistance*.” *The Resistance, in Arabic al-muqawama, is an all-encompassing philosophy. For more information on al-muqawama click here. Below are some articles I’ve written on the subject : Is War in the Middle East Inevitable? Inside Hezbollah’s Private Dominion Making Friends with a Scorpion: the Murder of the Italian Peace Activist in…

Arab Journalist Challenges Arab Media

December 9, 2012 Below is a translation of an article by the Kuwaiti journalist, Abdullah Al Hadlaq.  I referred to it in my video: Arab Perspectives on Operation Pillar of Defense.    The article, quite an exceptional one, was published in the Al-Watan newspaper in Kuwait on November 19, 2012.  I bring this piece to you attention because it is my goal to expose you to the Arab voices that advocate for “the Israeli side.” I hope you find it interesting and valuable.  A Word of Truth: Double Standards and Not Calling Things by their Real Name by Abdullah Al Hadlaq When terror organizations in the Gaza Strip, including Hamas, launch rockets on Israeli cities attempting to kill innocent civilians including…

Arab Perspectives: Operation Pillar of Defense (part 1)

In this video, that I originally filmed for Feenjan (please see below for more info), in Arabic (with English subtitles) I talk about the way Arabs view Israel’s motivation to launch Operation Pillar of Defense. In this video I discuss the real reason that motivated Israel to launch the operation that was not mentioned in the any analysis made by Arab writers, commentators or politicians and what can we learn from that.  Along with the different Arab reasons I present (some of which by the way are quite groundless…) I also share with you a most exceptional and rare perspective of a Kuwaiti columnist. I am not sure how many of you are familiar with my initiative Feenjan.  Feenjan – Israel speaks Arabic is a non-profit initiative which I founded and support that presents contemporary Israeli society and…

The King of Bahrain to visit the Gaza Strip This Week?

October 29, 2012 by Avi Melamed According to reports in the Arab media – which have been denied by official Bahraini spokesmen – the King of Bahrain will visit the Gaza Strip by the end of this week. Such a visit, should it take place, would be another indication of the Gulf States willingness to reward Hamas following its detachment from the Iranian-Syrian axis. A visit by the King of Bahrain, following last week’s visit of the Emir of Qatar to the Gaza Strip is a clear sign of support of the Gulf monarchies for the pragmatic wing of Hamas. The visit is also a signal from Saudi Arabia.  Qatar’s tendency to conduct independent foreign policy and to promote its…

Saudi Arabian Daily Okaz Confirms my October 13 article Hezbollah Launched Rockets on Syrian City

October 18, 2012 by Avi Melamed On Sunday, October 14 I wrote a short piece Hezbollah Launched Rocket Attack on Syrian City announcing that Hezbollah had launched a rocket attack from inside Lebanon targeting the Syrian city of Al-Qusayr. Today (October 17, 2012) an official spokesperson of The Free Syrian Army confirmed my report stating that Hezbollah has launched massive rockets and mortar attacks from the Lebanese area of Hosh Ali on the outskirts of the Syrian city of Al Qusyir. Here is a link to the article published in the Saudi Arabian daily newspaper Okaz http://www.okaz.com.sa/new/Issues/20121017/Con20121017541085.htm I have also taken the liberty of providing you with a “google translation” of the article: Informed sources in the Syrian opposition’s Okaz…

The Gaza Strip – Mercedes Benz and iPhone 5’s

October 16 2012  by Avi Melamed On October 7, 2012 the Estelle (boat) left Naples, Italy heading for the Gaza Strip. Reportedly, the boat is carrying goods for the people of Gaza like games, musical instruments, cement, etc.  The organizers announced that their goal is to draw the world’s attention to the suffering of the people in the Gaza Strip caused by the Israeli siege. On many occasions, both in briefings as well as in articles, I have discussed everyday life in the Gaza Strip.  Each time I talk about this issue I emphasize the following: Many people in Gaza struggle economically.  However, the narrative of the “humanitarian crisis” and the “suffering of the people of Gaza” (caused by the Israeli siege) that…

The Iranians and the Mossad are in Cahoots and Other Assorted Distortions…

October 6, 2012 by Avi Melamed The violent events in the Arab and Muslim world sparked by the movie “Innocence of Muslims” do not reflect the majority of Muslims.  In fact, it is doing them a disservice because the truth is that the majority of Muslims reject extremism. That being said, the events do reflect the deep feelings of frustration and inferiority which are rampant today in the Muslim and Arab world.  These feelings stem from the fact that the Arab and Muslim world today is by and large an “underachieving” society – socially and economically – plagued by suffocating poverty, high rates of unemployment, ever-growing corruption, paralyzing illiteracy, lack of civil and personal rights, and escalating violence. The events that…

The Muslim Brotherhood Belly Dancing

September 22, 2012 November 8, 2011 Avi Melamed writes an article The Arab Awakening: An Era of New Slogans  “…The Arab world is in flux and the Muslim Brotherhood movement in Egypt, is now in unfamiliar territory – they are finally in the driver’s seat.   Therefore, they will have to bridge the gaps between their ideology and the need for pragmatism…I think it is quite reasonable to assume that the policy of the Muslim Brotherhood will be characterized by a permanent inner-tension that stems from their need to bridge their rigid ideology and their need for pragmatism.  And it is likely that this tension will create turbulence that will inevitably impact the region.”  September 22, 2012 an article published in L.A…

The Sinai Peninsula: A Growing Strategic Threat

August 30, 2012 by Avi Melamed According to a one senior Egyptian analyst, the Rafah terror attack was planned over the course of three months by six  Jihadist and Takfir groups. One of the groups also involved, according to one senior Egyptian official, was a Palestinian terror group based in the Gaza Strip named Jeish Al Islam (Islam’s Army). The groups involved in the attack are not part of Al-Qaida.  However, they are inspired by its ideology.  Al-Qaida has announced the establishment of an Islamic Emirate in the Sinai Peninsula and as far back as December 20, 2011, Al-Qaida announced the presence of its military wing in the Sinai Peninsula, called Ansar Al Jihad. Some of the militants that perpetrated…

Nasrallah is sending a message…..But to whom ??

August 23, 2012 by Avi Melamed Arab source reports that last week Hezbollah conducted the largest military ground maneuver exercise in its history.  The operation, held in the Beqa’a (the Lebanese valley) included 10,000 members of Hezbollah’s elite force – many of the militants are 16 – 20 years old. Nasrallah personally attended and monitored part of the exercise together with officers of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards. The maneuver simulated Hezbollah’s takeover of the Upper Galilee area in Israel. Hezbollah’s tactics resembled the ones they practiced during the 2006 war with one main difference – the new advanced weapon systems supplied to Hezbollah by Iran.  Their new arsenal includes advanced anti-tank missiles and drones that can be used for both intelligence…

Egypt’s New Foreign Policy

July 30, 2012 February 3, 2012 Avi publishes an article Is the Israel Egypt Peace Treaty in Jeopardy?  in which he accurately foresees the foreign policy of Egypt’s new rule. Here is an excerpt from the article: “… the current Saudi-Egyptian alliance is crucial for Egypt…and Egypt is keenly aware of its dependence on Saudi support…the Saudis expect Egypt to restore their sovereignty in the Sinai Peninsula – the sooner the better – and to avoid events that could endanger the Saudi’s interests  …Egypt’s dependence on the support of the international community, and mostly the US, is deepening  …some African states are demanding that the agreement concerning the split of the water from Nile River be revised in a way…
