The flag of the Syrian rebellion was raised today at the Turkish-Syrian border at Bab al-Hawa Border Crossing. The raising of the flag of the Rebellion was likely coordinated with Turkey. Turkey’s acquiescence sends a number of signals to a number of players on a variety of issues including: One – the northern part of Syria is an area of utmost strategic importance for Turkey. Two – Turkey will not accept the establishment of a Kurdish autonomy in northern Syria. Three – Turkey will not accept an Iranian presence in northern Syria. Four – it is also a signal to the US and Russia that the interests of Turkey in northern Syria must be taken into account in any political arrangement in Syria.
